Royal Race jersey and short with Rivet glove

Royal Racing has been a veteran in the gravity clothing market for many years. Many professional and amateur racers alike have turned to Royal for their riding gear due to its solid construction and good looks. We figure if its good enough for Steve Peat to sport year after year its good enough for anyone. Check inside for our thoughts on their 2010 Race shorts and jersey as well as their Rivet glove.

Royal has several different jersey and shorts models. In this review we’ll be taking a look at the Race line.

Race Jersey Features:

The Race jersey is made from a moisture wicking fabric with a lyrca neck.  The fabric does a nice job of not only fitting comfortably, but also aids in cooling quite well.

Race Shorts Features:

The shorts have a matching pattern to coincide with the Race jersey.  They’ve got a nice cut to them that helps reduce any hanging up on the saddle when you get in steep terrain and pedaling in general.

The shorts use two snap buttons paired with a zipper to secure in the front.  The waist system uses Velcro adjusters on both sides along with elastic to snug the pants securely around the hips.  The system works quite well and snugging up the shorts couldn’t be much easier.  Compared to the 2009 Royal shorts, these adjusters are a bit more refined and improved.

The pants have two zippered pockets and small tailbone pad as well. They have also added a wicking liner and venting for comfort and extra airflow.  The pockets can be left open as well should you want even more airflow.

Sizes are XS-XL with colors in matching purple, red, and black.

Rivet Glove Features:

The glove has a pre-curved fit with highly vented fabrics.

The fabrics are four-way stretch with sweat wicking properties.  On the sides of each finger (black sections) the glove is able to help keep your hand cool as it uses a breathable material to help with airflow and sweat wicking.  There is a tab on the backside of the glove to help aid in installation as well.

The index and middle fingers have rubber grippers for brake lever traction.  Thin gloves while they don’t provide a ton of protection, help give a connected feeling with the bar as there is not a ton of padding in between you and the handlebar.  These thin gloves are easy to forget you have on which is quite nice on hot days and with general mobility as they don’t seem to hinder any movements.  If you’re looking for something with a bit more protection from Royal they also offer a Pro-Glove that has a bit more padding to it.

Performance:

Overall the Royal Race gear has improved quite a bit in fit and finish.  The most notable thing about this 2010 gear is how well it vents.  The materials used provide for a breezy sweat free ride most of the time while still providing good protection against abrasion and other crash damage.  The thing to note about Royal gear is that it is designed for mountain bikers (downhillers in this case) and isn’t adapted from a motorcycle lineup.  Each piece is cut and designed for use with the mountain bike and the end products shines in its intended environment with its purpose built features.
