Yakima HookUp

Issues and Concerns:

Bike clearance:

As you can see from the picture below the clearance between the bike and the arm is a little close. When I first loaded the bikes I thought I had installed the trays wrong. We’re not sure that much damage can really be done by the arm being so close to the seatstay but it could become an issue with certain bikes. It’s not the width between the bikes that causes the issue it’s the fact that the larger adjustable hook part of the arm sticks out further.

Safety:

Depending on your vehicle the rack could pose several safety hazards. Due to the fact that the rack holds the bikes close to the rear of your vehicle tail light and license plate visibility can be diminished. The HookUp does not come with license plate relocation hardware. Rack width shouldn’t be an issue with the rack being wider than your vehicle but do make sure to check the dimensions for proper fit.

Locking hardware:

The HookUp rack does not come with locking hardware in standard configuration. You have to purchase the additional LockUp kit in order to incorporate some addition security against theft. This additional hardware costs $54 and includes a security cable with lock and a locking hitch pin. The trays themselves have slots built in so that you can thread your locking cable through and secure your bike to the rack.

Notice the slot on the side of the tray for securing with a cable.

Wheel straps:

As I mentioned before, I find wheel straps slightly awkward. They work great once latched in but getting the strap threaded into the latch can cause some frustration. There is a groove that the strap must go into to work right. Missing this groove is easy to do because the latch opening is big enough to try to slide the strap into the wrong area instead of the groove.
