Yakima HookUp
The Product:
The Yakima HookUp as stated before is a hitch mounted tray style rack. We are reviewing the 1 ¼” version of the HookUp which was attached to a Curt Manufacturing 1 ¼” receiver hitch. I’ll be sure to mention any differences between the 1 ¼” version and the 2” version as Yakima does make both sizes.
History:
Yakima started some 25 years ago creating durable and dependable “destination hardware”. Over the years the products have evolved using new technology and improving designs. Yakima strives to create products that are environmentally conscious, innovative, and user friendly. Their employees play as hard as they work using Yakima products themselves in the field to make sure the customer receives a quality product that will last. With Yakima the needs of the customer always come first.
Features:
- Fit wheel sizes from 20″ to 29″: Due to the universal fit front wheel tray and articulating rear wheel tray the HookUp was able to fit bikes within the whole wheel size spectrum.

- Fits wide range of tire sizes: We tried tire sizes from skinny road bike tires all the way up to bigger full on downhill tires and all worked fine with no clearance issues.
- Holds 2 bikes: The 1 1/4″ version of the rack can carry 2 bikes, while the 2″ version can carry up to 4 with the HookUp Plus2 attachment.

- Carrying capacity of 110lbs: The HookUp can accept bike weights up to 55lbs per bike. This is more than enough capacity for 2 monster bikes.
- Can be stowed when not in use: The rack folds up tight against the vehicle when not in use. The HookUp folds up very nicely to the back of my car as can be seen in the picture. A simple pull of the saftey clip and pin allows for easy articulation between up and down positions.
- Quick and easy bike loading: The HookUp is relatively simple to use. Simply put the bike in the trays and adjust the strap and arm to the correct tension.
- Minimal bike contact: The front wheel tray holds the front wheel securely via the pivoting arm while the rear wheel is held down by the plastic strap with a rubber cushion. The rubber cushion in the rear is a nice touch so that your rims do not get scratched.
- Compact design: The HookUp rack has a small footprint behind your car while keeping the width and depth to adequate dimensions to carry all sorts of different bikes.
Installation and Bike Mounting:
The HookUp rack is a very easy rack to install and mount your bikes. The primary components of the rack are already pre-constructed for you. Yakima included an 8mm hex wrench and installation hardware but you’ll also need a 3/4″ (19mm) and a 17mm wrench to complete the installation of the rack.
The steps you have to perform to install the hitch and mount your bikes are as follows:
- Install the hitch receiver and secure with hitch bolt
- Attach the trays with provided hardware
- Rotate the arm, flip up the front wheel tray tire wire, and release the rear wheel strap
- Load your bikes into the trays
- Secure your bikes with the arms and wheel straps
