Build Quality:

As mentioned earlier the the Pocket Shock DXG is primarily made from plastic and aluminum with Kraton used in the handle. The gauge itself is the only piece that gives the shock any heft. At around 170g the pump is fairly lightweight. The gauge has a nice chrome finish and includes a protective rubber ring around the outside to keep it from getting scratches. The pump is very sturdy and doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy during use. The rubber hose is sufficiently thick and shouldn’t have any problem with getting nicked or cut.

How well does it work?

The pump works as advertised. I tested its ability to eliminate air loss many times during my use. The gauge either read the same or only had a slight PSI value difference than the previous reading after reengaging the valve. The gauge itself will have a slight bit of tolerance which accounts for the readings being slightly different. The process is very easy to do by simply screwing on the Schrader valve and then screwing down the engage/disengage valve knob. Once the correct pressure is achieved the engage/disengage valve knob is loosened and then the Schrader valve is removed. A light puff of air can be heard escaping when the Schrader valve is released but this air does not effect the overall shock pressure. This is slightly unnerving at first but after my tests it was found to make no difference on the shock pressure due to the air left inside the pump.

The hose is of sufficient length in order to reach most locations with ease. The swivel allows the pump to stay compact while offering the rider to ability to pump at different angles than a standard straight pump. The gauge is easy to ready and the air bleeder allows for nice small changes in PSI.

Issues and Concerns:

The pump works as advertised and needs very little improvement. I’d have liked to have seen a gauge cover included with the pump instead of having to go buy the extra hard shell case. The disengagement operation could also be performed quicker with a quick release mechanism instead of having to tighten and loosen it each time.

Conclusion:

Topeak has created another great product for bicycle enthusiasts. The Pocket Shock DXG performs great and doesn’t take up too much space. The gauge is easy to read and operation is a pretty fool proof. The Pressure-Rite Shock Valve does its job and keeps the pressure you want in the shock instead of losing it when you disengage from the valve. The construction is top notch and having a long swivel hose makes reaching your shock valve easy. For the money the Pocket Shock DXG is hard to beat.
