Smith Piston 199 Goggle Review
Lenses
The stock lens that comes with Piston 199 is relatively upscale. It has a nice color matched mirror finish. However, as with all mirror finish lenses they do attract finger prints.
Lens Highlights
- Lexan lenses are used on all Piston models offering scratch resistance as well as 100% UVA/B/C protection.
- The lens passes CE motorcycle standard EN 1938 giving it great impact resistance.
- Smith has many options for replacement and accessory lenses for the Piston series.
- Lenses pop in and out of place without a lot of trouble making lens swaps easy.
- Built-in double secured tearoff posts are incorporated into each lens for use with Smith’s laminated tearoff’s.
- The Piston 199 is able to accept Smith’s Roll Off’s system
- The Piston tearoff’s install easily and come with a third retention post that is added to the goggle strap in order to keep the tabs from flapping. The tearoff’s are sectioned into sets of 3 and are hardly noticed once installed.
- Smith’s ODS system can be used for those that need prescription lenses.
Lens Issues
- The mirror lens finish picks up finger prints very easily, which can be annoying.
- The mirrored lenses don’t have any anti-fog treatment. Accessory lenses with anti-fog treatment and anti-fog cloths are available for those looking for anti-fog features.
- Smith doesn’t include any tearoff’s with this goggle.
- Even though the lens retention system is rather simple, the standard flat lens could be improved by using a pre-curved lens.
- The Piston 199 tearoff posts are securely attached but degrade peripheral vision slightly. They are larger than normal tearoff posts due to the way that they are attached to the lens.
