Smith Piston 199 Goggle Review
Goggle Body
The Piston 199 has a less flexible goggle body than some of the other goggles on the market. It still flexes to fit the contours of the riders face it just isn’t as easy to manipulate at other goggle bodies. Some riders may like this as it gives the goggle a more solid feel and allows the face foam to do its job. The ventilation on the Piston 199 is on par with most of the other higher-end goggles, wrapping all the way around the frame.

Body Highlights
- Solid yet flexible frame gives good support and durable feel.
- Face foam opening is generously proportioned as to allow ample breathing room around the eyes.
- The F.A.T. triple-layer face foam is thicker on this model than a lot of the other goggles which allows it to contour to the face more easily and has great sweat wicking properties.
- Smith designed a good amount of venting around the entire Piston 199 frame making fogging less probable and adding comfort on warm days.
- The strap on the Piston 199 is extra wide and easily adjustable.
- For added strap grip Smith has used larger beads of silicone than most companies.
- The Piston 199’s goggle body has several tri-color colorways with matching mirrored lenses as well as interchangeable hop up parts making it look anything but boring.
- Articulating outrigger system for the strap allows the goggle to easily adapt to different helmet and face types for a snug fit with even pressure.
- Piston ¼ nose guard is available for added nose protection.
Some improvements to the goggle body
- As mentioned previously, the Piston 199 has a generous amount of face padding. Although this is great for comfort, it was found that on smaller faces the nose padding can actually be too large and decrease airflow through the nostrils.
- Less flexible frame and medium to larger frame could cause fitment issues on smaller faces and helmets.
- The goggle bag is soft enough to be used for lens cleaning but does not work as well as other bags at removing smears and fingerprints.
- Our Piston 199 sample had a white frame which is the same color on the inside of the lens. When changing lenses to a less glare resistant or higher light transmission rate version the rider will see more glare due to the frame reflecting light.
