“Do-It-All” Bike Build Guide

written by: J.A. Caldwell

Introduction

Back in the day, during our younger years, we were all “one bike” riders. We all had that single bike we rode everywhere and did everything on. It was your commuter bike, road bike, dirt jumper, and trail bike all built into one. As you grow older most people begin to demand more out of their bike and buy a more fitting model than the old multi-use bike. These days it’s not uncommon for many riders to have three to four bikes that are all built with a different purpose. While it’s nice to have a bike for each discipline, some riders for one reason or another seek a “do-it-all” bike. These riders want a bike that is able to descend, jump, climb, and handle varying terrain with ease.

This guide is aimed to help out riders who are looking for advice to build their own “do-it-all” bike. This guide’s purpose is to help highlight key components that have their own place on a “do-it-all” bike. There is no ranking or preference on the suggested choices; they are merely listed in alphabetical order. The guide is not meant to be a be-all-end-all solution for building your bike. We hope that is guide will fuel your curiosity and research during your next build. In the end, our goal is to make your build come together quicker with less time spent having to search for all of the answers or at least point you in the right direction.

All the pictures and links are click to enlarge so you can easily see what each part looks like. The conclusion will have links to all of the manufacturers mentioned as well as a list of resources and helpful sites to find more information. We have also developed a build spreadsheet so that you can easily organize your build with weight, cost, and part information.

We encourage discussion on this guide. We know as well as anybody that one size doesn’t fit all and each rider has their own opinion on parts and build specs. Feel free to share your knowledge and opinion in our forums. By having a community discussion we’ll be to continue to append the guide and make it better for everyone.
