Keeping price aside...
Socom vs. Uzzi VPX???
Basically I'm an ex-bmxer and mainly rode dirt and a little bit of street. I've worked in a badass bike shop in the past for about 5 years which grew me into mtb'ing...particularly DH & FR. Having a BMX dirt background I'd like to say that I'm pretty smooth and don't go hacking and smashing into everything. I had a Santa Cruz Bullit a few years ago but sold it off for several reasons. I'm now getting back into DH & FR , am super excited about it, and am looking to build a great dual duty rig. I want the bike to be comfortable and confidence inspiring in either situation I put myself & the bike in. I want it to handle FR style jumps, stunts, etc as well as fast or technical DH shoots down the mountain. Most of my riding will be at Diablo Free Ride park, Platekill and some urban stuff (stair gaps, etc). Neither bike will be required to be pedaled uphill and such as I'll just be hoping on the lift to get back up top and I already have a nice XC bike for when I'd like to do that.
The build on either frame will be the same:
- '08 Marzocchi 888 RC3 (MAYBE a 66 RC3)
- Not sure on the wheelset yet...looking at either Chris King (most likely CK), Hadley or Industry 9 hubs laced to Mavic rims (721 or 729?)...also not sure on 135 or 150
- Hayes Mag 8"
- Maxxis Minions F & R
- E13 SRS
- FSA Gravity Light crankset
- Welgo MG1's
- XT shifter, Ultegra der., XTR cassette XT chain
- FSA Gravity Carbon or Gravity Light handlebar
- E13 Zerostack w/ FSA headset
- Thomson post, not sure on a saddle yet
So, what do you guys think?
Any recommendations on the build? I'm looking for a lighter but solid and strong build
Also, as for the 888 on the Uzzi...
Do you think it'll mess with the geometry that much?
At first I was thinking that it was quite a big fork for the frame. After researching it I found that Intense' geometry is based off a 170mm travel fork with a 552mm ride height...as per the Marz website, it shows that the '08 888 has a fork length of 567mm which isn't that far off at all. The '08 66 actually has a fork length of 564mm...so they are both very close to each other and at most only 15mm taller than what Intense' geometry of the frame is based of off.
FWIW, Intense measures the Socom utilizing a 562.5mm fork length
