Sneak Peek: 2009 Commencal

For 2009, Commencal has reworked a lot of their bikes. They sent over some information and we asked a few additional questions on the Supreme DH to give you guys a bit more information. Check it out inside.
“The previous DH bike was getting old as it had been designed in 2004 and both tracks and equipments have changed a lot since then. We wanted to keep all the things that were appreciated on this old one and gave to it some extra updated stuff.”

The 2009 Commencal’s main DH bike as show above has been reworked significantly.
- Available in 2 sizes (S-M and L-XL)
- Frame weight without shock Commencal says is 4.5kg (9.91lbs)
- Optimized for 38t chainring while previous versions were designed around a 44t.
- Increased chainguide compatibility
- 83mm bb shell
- ISCG-05
- Increased travel to 200mm
The aim of the Supreme DH bike is to be “DH world cup readyâ€.
Highlights:
- The inner sleeve in the head tube to adjust the head angle. Even if it adds some weight to the frame (around 150g) it is so useful as tracks can be so different and you only have one bike.
- We kept the same BB height. As we have more rear travel, the BB is lower while riding.
- With the « low » BB height we also lowered the center of gravity in order to be more stable and have a better handling while cornering.
- We also opened the head angle from 64.5° to 64° as people are going faster and faster and varying track design.
- As we lowered the center of gravity we now have a very sloping frame (2cm lower) for a better body positioning. We also managed to have a better seat tube height adjustability.
- We changed the position of the main pivot slightly in order to avoid kick back. People are riding with 38t chainrings and they used to run 44t rings so we have designed the Supreme around that change.
- We shortened the distance between BB and main pivot.
- We have added a little of progressivity for an even better traction.

i dont know about everyone else, but i think that the toptube should be bent down. look at how much space there is in that triangle that doesnt need to be there. by all means keep the seat height where it is. but there could be way more standover room than that.
I agree with you “sam”, but I don’t think there would be any way to keep the seat up reasonably high if the TT were bent. On the mini dh, a person might need to raise the seat to climb, so that would be out of the question. But on the Dh, you are probably right. Just stock it with a 300 mm seatpost.
I agree with sam, but it might be only cosmetic - there might be enough standover. It is hard to tell until you’ll ride it…
Im glad they increase the travel and the head angle is decreased… this bike is pimp…anyone know an estimated price?
Also worth mentioning - This design they say has more standover clearance than previous models.

I agree that they shoud cahnge the top tube. A litle hydro there should give a more organic form,,,
Ugly. Work that top tube down and redesign the front triangle before I vomit. Looks like the bastard child of an old Rocky Mountain DH bike and NORBA hardtail. Ugly.

The prototype that Gee and Dan tested (Cedric’s front triangle mated to Gee and Dan’s preferred longer rear triangle) had a sloping top-tube, and the bike (despite it’s bright neon green lively) looked amazingly clean. At that point I was set and ready to take out (another) loan to buy that frame but alas, the production version is not too easy on the eyes.
With that said, it’s still on my short list for potential full-on DH rigs.
