Shimano Saint UPDATED M810 Grouppo

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Finally we can tell you about the new Shimano Saint (M810) that Shimano has coming soon. The return of the 4-pot brake as well as lighter parts all around in the entire Saint lineup. Did Shimano hit the nail square on the head this time around? More details inside on the bits we found interesting.

Four-Pot brake returns

Shimano has brought back their 4 piston brake (quad piston) branded under the Saint name. Additionally there are two different piston sizes in the caliper and Shimano claims 50% stronger stopping power with the new Saint Servo Wave Levers while providing improved modulation as well. The lever Shimano says is beefed up as well. If you ever used the M755/756 4-pot XT brakes, you’re probably drooling right now.

Lighter Saint Crankset

Shimano has redone the whole line, and the cranks will see a 90g weight savings according to Shimano (single ring configuration). This will put the new Saint crank arms at ~800g (excluding bottom bracket). In addition to that, they boast some additional ankle clearance, a narrower q-factor, and will be available in an all mountain setup (24/36/bash) or single ring setup. The Saint crankset they say is 200% stiffer than an XT crankset. It will retain the steel pedal insert and washer setup as well.

Short Cage Saint Shadow Dérailleur

A Saint short cage derailleur that mounts without any special do dads. Featuring Shimano’s Shadow technology, increased spring tension (over xt/xtr), skid plate, cassette mode adjustability, and much more. It will also be available in medium cage length. To go in hand with the new rear derailleur, the shifter is also revamped. They feature 2 way release, and a few other tidbits that let you tweak it nicely to get that optimal setup.

Also noteworthy is a specific 2 ring front derailleur, and new rear hubs that will be available in 135 x 12 , 135 x 10, and 150 x 12 with improved sealing. See more pictures in the gallery.

    mmmmhhhmm.. 4 pot saints!

  2. Henkdawg Says:

Unreal, I’m stoked…hopefully everything came out on the other side of a Jenny Craig diet as the market dictates now. It even looks as though Shimano is easing up on the proprietory BS, we have SRAM to thank for that I do believe.

  3. Craig Says:

I must say, Shimano is becoming very tempting.

  4. jamie maller Says:

    A few questions

When will the new saint stuff be sold to the public?

Will the saint short cage rear mech be usable with an xtr shifter?

Are the saint 4-pot brakes more powerful that the xt ones?

And how much are all of these gona cost?

if anyone can answer these please do

  5. benni Says:

the design of the new saint derailleur reminds me of a specialized demo linkage.

  6. Jou Says:

HOLY YES! shadow shortcage rd is what i always dreaming for! and yea…4-pot brake is back again, now on-board Saint!!

  7. Sillymanda Says:

I hope daddy buys me these for my birthday!

  8. clockworked Says:

So are the cranks normal width now? I couldn’t really tell from the pictures. As in, will they fit in my 50×25mm crank holders on my bike rack like raceface and truvative cranks?

  9. cooper_xl Says:

the derailleur reminds the Transformers :)

  10. soundoftheground Says:

what exactly is cassette mode adjustability?

  11. matt b Says:

two piece saint calipers? ewww. and what happened to the axle mounted derailleur? wasn’t that the whole benefit of the saint deraillleur??

  12. sicklines Says:

Two piece saint caliper according to Shimano is stiffer than the current mono body m775 XT. While i would’ve liked to see a mono body as well, i’m not turned off by the two piece one necessarily. Yes it will be more powerful than the XT ones.
Yes, you can use an xtr shifter with the saint rear derailleur.

Cassette mode adjustability - The derailleur apparently has an option to help it adjust it’s profile so that it can work better with varying cassettes better. You can set it to a tighter (road cassette) or a broader (XC/AM) one.

As far as the axle mounted design, it did work in some scenarios better but this design is clearly more compatible without the need for proprietary parts and clearance issues.

  13. GES Rider Says:

Shimano easing up on proprietary BS…surely you gest! Please review the disc brake connection point. As soon as Shimano starts taking back market share, count on a re-introduction of proprietary, one system components.

  14. Andrew P Says:

Good to see Shimano continuously pushing the envelope, I’d be very curious how all this new gear holds up against Sram’s stuff. Also curious to know more accurate weight numbers for all the parts.

  15. Adam Says:

Looks very, very tasty. I’ll be taking some brakes, the cranks and the mech I think!

Little bit more of the info from press is on the STW site:

  16. Henkdawg Says:

Proprietary stuff that makes sense like the centrelock hubs/rotors is fine with me, its a better way of attching the rotor to the hub. Unlike the previous Saint bolt on Derailleur/Hub

  17. Simon Says:

    Looks all good, weight specifications?

  18. Scott Says:

YES! I can finally buy Shimano brakes that will be 4piston like my old 4 pots! I loved those things.

  19. dan Says:

Welcome back 4 piston (i still ride the old XT quadra best brake ever)

  20. Ben Rix Says:

Very original with the gold. SRAM makes something good, shimano imitates. Looks good still.

  21. VancouverIslguy Says:

Damn. Everything except the derailleur looks good to me. The entire reason I run Saint is for the axle mounted derailleur. I hope they do an axle mount in addition to the Shadow.

  22. tantutz Says:

Shimano… Shimano… Shimano… ill buy it tom!!! hahaha

  23. pilonasd Says:

super cool…..got to get me one of those things

  24. blake2234 Says:

i am putting my order in now !!!!!!

they are soo nice and good to see shimano bring back the 4 pots

  25. Jake Says:

wow all looks sweet! might ask for the full set for christmas. Does any one no how much the full set will cost in £’s?

  26. Jake Says:

yer for some more pics you can also check out

    http://www.bikeradar.com/

  27. Mike Says:

Sicklines, I know the axle mount didn’t work with a lot of bikes but WHY did Shimano get rid of it? There’s no way I’m gonna buy that weak little thing!

  28. kampret Says:

I only see chainring 24/36t mentioned, will there be a 38t version too? i think 38t give good power…

  29. sicklines Says:

Are you asking about a 38t single ring or a 24/38t double setup?

  30. HAB Says:

I’m most excited about the 36t front derailleur. I’m currently working on a homemade dual ring chainguide with a taco, and the new FD should make that a little easier.

  31. Banshee-Ripper Says:

I love the gold accents! I would love to see that on a S-C, V10 Black with gold links, and an ‘05 888 all black with gold top caps, and top it off with a gold King Headset! I reccon that would be a sick lookin’ bike!

  32. alex Says:

isn’t the idea of saint delairers to attach to the axle not the hanger defeating the purpose of the shadow

  33. sicklines Says:

No that isn’t the point of Saint derailleurs. The point is to make a solid derailleur that can be used in the rigors of FR/DH.

If they felt the axle attachment method no longer was necessary with the Shadow technology, there would be no need to continue with it.

  34. Mike Says:

To sicklines: If you ever see anybody related to Shimano, tell them theres no way I’m gonna buy the little weak derailurre. If I wanted weight weenie stuff I’d get XO, now there’s no derailurre out there that doesn’t have to be replaced every time you get in a bad crash.

  35. sicklines Says:

Will pass that along Mike. The change wasn’t made for weight savings as far as we know.

  36. Jorgos Says:

When will this stuff be available? Namely the brakes.

  37. sicklines Says:

Fall it will be available. August/Sept.

  38. dading huliganga Says:

    same as question number 4

  39. sicklines Says:

all those questions are already answered.

  40. BCWDS Says:

I just rode the new Saint product. The brakes are strong!!! There is no lack of stopping power. The rest of the product is super light and solid. The new shift/Rd combo has a very solid shift feel, you know when it shifted!!! The Cranks are way lighter than the 800’s. Everything is pretty dialed, you wont be disappointed!

  41. bigring=bashgaurd Says:

Will the 4 pot brakes be compatible with the XT 765 Dual control levers like my M755 4 pots are?
