Sram “Maxle Light” RockShox 20mm Axle
Thursday, February 28th, 2008SRAM has announced the Maxle Light axle for the Reba’s. It still will use a 20mm x 110mm hub, and they claim a 50g weight savings over a standard maxle. Now they just need manufacturers to make a lightweight 20mm hub… The stage is now apparently set and its nice to see them working within the current “standards”.

“Now they just need manufacturers to make a lightweight 20mm hub…”
I think a claimed 185 grams for a 20mm WTB LaserDisc Super Duty hub is pretty light. But, I’m not a huge gram counter.

Oh man this should be interesting. Good of SRAM to stick with the 20mm setup.
Hopefully it doesn’t hurt hub manufacturers trying to make super light 20mm hubs and distinguishing a XC/AM hubs vs a FR/DH one.
188g isn’t bad for a 20mm thru axle hub, compared to a disc qr hub however at ~100 - 150g. Tune does make a light 20mm hub at 152g.

Well - any reduction in rotating mass is a good one. Easier to accelerate, easier to brake - Id be interested in a lightweight hub (sans the formula carbon one. That scares me)
Anyhow, i wonder if they will make lighter maxel’s for the other line of forks they have. I know they aren’t interchangeable so it would be nice to see. Id like to lighten my Pike dual air even more.

Exactly where does this leave the Shimano 15mm boondoggle?

It leaves them the same place they were at yesterday..
I don’t see Shimano doing anything different and 15mm will still go on as planned.

I think it’s all about which brand can convince wheel company’s to invest. Being Shimano and Fox grouped together on it. I think Shimano’s 15mm thru-axle will come out first.

A lot of hub companies are already producing 20mm hubs so bringing out lighter versions may be easier than retooling for 15mm.
Hope’s 20mm Pro II is 180g by the way

aaah so thats what them new XT wheel sets are made for. Spotted XTR 20mm hubs aswell.
Remember back in 2001 some guys showe cased a custom 20mm XT hub (made from a reg model) on a bikeshow. shimano didnt like that too much)
is weight whinning ever going to end?
