Helly Hansen Racing Bag

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Helly Hansen has developed a lot of great equipment for the active enthusiast. One of the pieces of equipment that is usually needed when traveling to the trail or to a race is a nice bag. Helly Hansen created the Racing Bag for such occasions when a full size duffel bag isn’t necessary. To find out more about the Racing Bag and its many features, look inside.

The Racing Bag from Helly Hansen incorporates many features that active travelers need. The bag isn’t large or bulky like a standard duffel bag because it is supposed to be used for lighter smaller trips. The bag has dual purpose adjustable straps which can be used to carry the bag like a standard duffel or be worn over the shoulders like a back pack. The bottom of the bag is padded in order to protect the items inside from damage.

Helly Hansen built two seperate areas in the Racing Bag in order to keep wet and dry items away from each other. The wet compartment has a large volume that if necessary can extend far into the dry area of the bag. The bag has a total volume of 35 liters which is enough to carry a couple of changes of clothes or other equipment. The Racing bag has many compartments designed to allow the user to stash lots of equipment and personal items like sunglasses, audio player, and tools.

The Racing Bag is available in Red and Black and has a MSRP list price of $49.99.

The Racing Bag functions well and is built to last but it does have a few issues. Even though the straps are advertised as being able to be used for carrying the bag as a back pack, they can be a bit awkward. The straps don’t have any padding which can dig into your shoulders when carrying a heavier load. The spacing is also relatively tight together making getting your arms through difficult at times. The zippers have a large tooth design which work fine but are a bit loose and can allow the compartments to unwontedly open. The water bottle pocket could also use a slightly more stretchable elastic material. Smaller water bottles fit easily but standard Gatorade or Vitamin Water bottles are more difficult to insert.

If you’re in the market for a nice light bag that is able to carry enough clothes for a small trip or a day at the races, the Racing Bag might be the ticket for you. It has some nice features like wet and dry storage areas, a plethora of pockets, and versatile carry methods.
