2007 Pro-Tec Ace Helmet

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Sometimes a full face helmet isn’t always needed for the type of riding you’re doing. On those days a nice freestyle helmet is a popular choice. Pro-Tec’s Ace helmet is designed for just this type of riding. To find out more about the Ace, check inside.

Pro-Tec has been in the freestyle helmet business since the early 70’s. They’ve taken their experience with building skate helmets and applied some new technology in order to create helmets for bike riders. Pro-Tec has a whole line of bike oriented helmets for all types of riding.

The Ace is a freestyle helmet that was designed to take impacts very well due to its SXP technology. SXP stands for Surface activated eXpanded Polypropylene. SXP is a patented technology that is designed to be able to handle multiple-impact crashes. The SXP foam liner has memory built into the material so when it experiences an impact it doesn’t fully compress. The liner actually returns to its original shape after absorbing the impact allowing for multiple absorbed impacts during a crash. This technology also allows you to not have to go out after each crash and purchase a new helmet.

The SXP technology does have it’s limits and Pro-Tec does suggest purchasing a new helmet if there are visible cracks in the helmet shell or SXP material. Pro-Tec has a nice helmet replacement policy that won’t drain your wallet in order to stay safe. Pro-Tec offers a $10 replacement for any damaged SXP or EPS helmet within a year of the purchase date.

The bike model we got to check out was the Ryan Guettler signature issue. It has thin removable padding on the inside with a green standard clip chin strap.

The padding adds some nice comfort and the weight of the helmet is very low. (click to enlarge)

The helmet covers the back of your head sufficiently but does not offer as much coverage as “All-Mountain” oriented helmets. The venting is ample with four vents in front and six on top as well as the back.

The helmet is available in Jr./S, M/L, and L/XL sizes. Pro-Tec also offers a Chris Doyle signature colorway as well as Metallic Red and Gunmetal Grey. It doesn’t weigh much either with the L/XL version coming in at 455g.

The Ace is also available in a skate oriented model which uses SXP technology as well. Below you can see some pictures of the Bucky Lasek model. Pro-Tec also offers signature skate models of the Ace for Bob Burnquist, Brian Patch, and Steve Caballero. The L size Ace Skate version weighs 355g.

The Ace’s list price is $39.99 MSRP.

The Ace is a nice helmet for alternative days when a full face helmet isn’t needed. The helmet is light and comfortable with great technology applied in order to help protect you during multiple-impact crashes. It’s also nice to know that you don’t have to purchase a new helmet each time you crash, saving you time and money as well as keeping you more safe. As always, we suggest trying the Ace on at a dealer in order to ensure the proper fit.
