Helly Hansen has been making quality textiles and garments for a long time. Since 1877 to be exact. They have garnered quite a reputation around the world for make great products that stand up to the elements and extreme use.

We got a chance to put a few of their products through the paces to see how they function. The Jaeger MTB jersey and Compass short are today’s products of discussion. Check inside to see more information and how they perform.

Jaeger MTB 3/4 Jersey

The Jaeger MTB jersey from Helly Hansen is a nice technical garment that performs well. The jersey is made out of several different types of materials, such as LIFA Stay Dry, Coolgrid, and open mesh. They help to wick moisture away from your body and allow for ventilation. Each different type of fabric is strategically placed in order to keep the rider cool. I never felt hot in the Jaeger jersey and it did a fairly good job of wicking sweat to the outside. The jersey is very comfortable to wear all day due to the soft texture and doesn’t snag easily as some performance fibers can tend to do.

Coolgrid fabric is used exclusively across the back of the jersey in order to maximize airflow (click to enlarge)

The jersey has a 3/4 length sleeve with a slightly longer tail in back. The shoulders are nice and roomy with a slimmer cut around the torso area. If you want to run armor with the Jaeger you should be fine, just make sure you get a size larger than you normally would.

Compass Short

The Compass short is a well designed piece of clothing for the active athlete. They may look slightly more casual than your standard active short but they perform well. The Compass short features several cargo pockets, a below the knee cut, and is made using a durable cotton ripstop nylon. The shorts fit great and didn’t bunch up or hinder movement on the seat. They allow adequate airflow while riding and never felt heavy or bulky. All of the pockets on the Compass are finished off nicely with double stitching and snaps to keep the flaps closed. I did find the front top pocket openings a little small. Getting your hand inside with a glove on is not easily done. The short is double stitched in all of the high stress areas and has double belt loops in the back.
