Project Avid Code + Avid Ultimate Update

Last month I showed you a sweet brakeset that I’m sure you drooled all over.

This next update I’ve taken a few pictures of the complete setup on the scale showing you just how light this setup is since I’m sure a bunch of you are still in doubt. I’ll make believers out of you!

Inside there are pictures of stock Juicy 7’s and the brakeset I constructed with the Avid Code caliper and Avid Ultimate Lever on the scale.

So here’s an update on the weight. As stated earlier, these weigh pretty much the same as Juicy 7’s. Both brakes below are cut to the same length. Both brakes below have no adapters and this is just the basic weight of each brake before including the adapters and rotor.

Avid Juicy 7 : Hose Length 1294mm

Avid Ulitmate + Code Caliper : Hose Length 1294mm

So there ya go. 3 grams off Juicy 7 weight. Pretty “Sick”.

    Amazing.

  • So how well do these work? Same power as codes, or at least more than Juicy 7s?

  • They add a touch more modulation over a code/code setup. They are way more powerful than Juicy 7’s.

  • that’s pretty awesome

just how much beef is in the lever-body of a code set anyways?

  • What about the plastic container? does thatadd weight aswell?

  • No the container doesn’t add weight, the scale was tared/zeroed once the container was on the scale.

Yep, there’s a good bit of beef in the code lever.

  • Sick:
can you post the weight of the beefy levers?

  • i want that really bad

  • is it possible to use a juicy 5 or 7 lever with the code calipers? did you use the code brake line or the juicy, because i noticed on BTIs website there are seperate lines offered for juicys and Codes? thanks.

  • How much would one of those in the front and back of my bike set me back?

  • See your email

  • Where did you get the caliper hardware? I was thinking about doing this with my juicy 5 levers, but i cant seem to find anyone that will sell me just the calipers…

  • Is there any way i can order separate levers and calipers from sram?

  • You can , but they’re hard to come by.

  • I know where I can get just the lever body and just the caliper. Do you think a juicy 7/code set up would work? Also what fluid lines do I need, juicy lines or code lines?

  • Ultimate Code with ti hardware in the caliper????

  • Which DOT did you use, the ultimate uses 5.1, the code uses 4????

  • dot 5.1 entirely was used.

  • good idea, but as oliver asked, im wondering how much this break set would set me back? and if anyone is prepared to sell a brake set like this.

  • Send an email if you want.

  • so avid can use dot 3,4, and 5.1?

  • Yea you could. Avid comes bled with 5.1 now. I would only use DOT 4 or Dot 5.1 in them.

  • I assume these weights include fluid?

I have a question about the Juicy Ultimate lever. How do you remove the blade itself as it looks like the pivot pin has to be pressed out. Is this the case?

  • yes they include fluid.

The pivot pin is held in place by an allen bolt.

  • I already have the Code 5’s, how or where can I get the Ultimate or Jicy 7 lever body to do this?

  • I know this is probably very late but I am getting some avid sevens. would it be possible to fit the code 5 calipers to them at some point so I get the pad adjustment and have no loss of braking. thank you

  • Has this combination been reliable? We have 2 sets of 2009 Codes and they require constant bleading and maintenance. I think the lever/body design is poor … adjustment knob poorly aligned to piston, piston gets gunged-up all the time and leakes brake fulid!

I love Codes when they are working BUT ……

So maybe replacing the levers/bodies might sort my issues?

Could you quote me for 2 sets of levers/bodies with Straightline levers please?

    • I haven’t experienced those issues with the code-juicy setup but Avid’s in general in my experience like a good bleed often than other brakes. Sounds like you might have a faulty setup if it is leaking as that shouldn’t happen. The brakes aren’t cheap to make and currently we’re not offering these brakesets but you can get them built at your bike shop if it’s a good one.
